As teachers and children across Cumbria prepare for the new primary SATS this May, Rebecca Hanson from Authentic Maths is celebrating having trained over 100 Cumbrian teachers and teaching assistants to teach the new primary maths curriculum.

Rebecca was one of the loudest critics of the new curriculum and SATS which require children who are only six to be examined on difficult skills such as mentally subtracting two 2-digit numbers.

Rebecca says

“I was extremely concerned that making the curriculum more difficult while removing county support and preventing children using apparatus in their SATS would damage primary maths teaching.”

“To help schools I wrote six separate courses for teachers of years 1 to 6.  I deliver these courses in schools and tailor them to the exact needs of each teacher.  I’ve been working full time delivering this specific year training since its launch in January and am booked up until May.”

“It’s been a privilege to work with so many excellent teachers.  They’re all working incredibly hard to make sure our children are properly prepared for the new exams they’ll face during the second week of May.”

About Rebecca Hanson :

Rebecca taught secondary maths in Cumbria and was the last Head of Mathematics at Ehenside School in Cleator Moor, helping to bring it out of special measures before it closed in 2008.  She then lectured in mathematics education at Manchester Metropolitan University, supervised PGCE students for the Open University and completed national mathematics education projects before retraining to lead primary professional development.  Rebecca is known for her high profile criticism of key aspects of current mathematics education policy and for her policy work on reforming Ofsted.  Authentic Maths provides primary mathematics professional development and is owned and run by Rebecca.

Lucinda Carlile and Amanda Henderson from Brunsick Infant School in Penrith receive their certificates from Rebecca Hanson after completing year 2 specialist mathematics training courses.  Brunswick Infants were the first infant school in Cumbria to train all their teachers for the new primary curriculum with year specific training from Authentic Maths.
